The Concept of Worldbuilding
This page introduce an example to worldbuilding in multimedia design
Worldbuilding is a broad concept that encompasses many different elements. Please note that this example is based on the field of multimedia design, however, the same principles can also be applied to worldbuilding in games. Likewise, worldbuilding techniques from games can be adapted and used in multimedia design.
Worldbuilding is about the narrative created behind a product that makes the experience of using the product immersive for the user.
Worldbuilding can give designers the opportunity to understand the universe in which a product exists, the story that should be presented, and how the product should be communicated. Based on this, worldbuilding functions as a tool that creates context and immersion around a product’s characteristics and background. Therefore, it can be used as a valuable tool for effective communication throughout the design process.
A moodboard is a small-scale example of worldbuilding, as it is used to create guidelines and a framework for a product’s narrative, while also establishing a particular vibe and story around the product being communicated.
The following are two moodboards for this website.
They demonstrate how moodboards can be used to illustrate what worldbuilding is. There is a strong contrast between the narratives each moodboard conveys. Which one do you think best represents the story and atmosphere of this website? The narrative is made clear through the worldbuilding that a moodboard can communicate.
